(1) Endeavour Award: The awards for the Mid West and South West region for the Supervalu Tidy Towns competition 2017 were presented in the Hotel Woodstock in Ennis last Friday at which Kilcornan received the Endeavour Award for County Limerick. The awards are in association with Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development and were presented by Minister of State Pat Breen. Kilcornan were represented by Rita O'Gorman and Lyn Nolan. Our neighbours Askeaton received their Pollinator award, for the small town category, which was accepted by Teresa Wallace. (2) Garden Bird Survey: We have formed a group of eight people to participate in the survey, conducted by BirdWatch Ireland. The survey is quite simple to carry out, even if your knowledge of different birds is not very large. It begins on Monday 4th December and lasts until the end of February. If you are interested and want to find out more, contact Lyn Nolan at 0876119048 before the start date. We would be delighted to increase the size of our group. (3) Two very interesting events, hosted by BirdWatch Ireland, were held last week and helped to further our knowledge. The first on Wednesday night in LIT was a talk on Ireland's Trees given by retired forester Gerry Murphy. The second was an outing to Curraghchase Forest Park where we saw chaffinches, jays, bramblings, tree creepers and the rare hawfinches who were having a great feed on the tops of the hornbeam trees growing to the right of the steps leading from the car park to the house. Have a look if you are in Curraghchase over the next few weeks.
