LIMERICK HISTORICAL SOCIETY: The next Limerick Historical Society lecture on Monday, April 10 next and is the final one before we break for our series of summer walks and tours. The lecture entitled 'From Dublin to Limerick by barge in an era before the railroads' will be given by Brian J. Goggin, who will explain how transport on the canal evolved. Brian is a writer and editor with a wide knowledge of this subject. The Lecture is at 8 p.m. in Room 203, Mary Immaculate College. Everybody is welcome. Ask at reception for directions.

Before the railway reached Limerick in 1848, people travelling from Dublin to Limerick had two options. The first was to take the coach, travelling along the line of the old N7; the second, which was slower but more comfortable, was to take the canal passenger-boat from Dublin to Shannon Harbour, the steamer from there to Killaloe and (depending on the season) the horse-drawn boat or the carriage from there to Limerick. The two routes were controlled by two of the most remarkable transport managers of their time: sometimes competing, sometimes cooperating, these two Irishmen eventually became co-founders of the greatest shipping line of the Victorian era.

Brian J Goggin is a writer and editor specialising on Irish waterways and canals.
