SYMPATHY: Sympathy is extended to the family of Katie Sheahan of Askeaton who passed away recently. Katie, for many years drove her school bus to our local school and many past pupils will have fond memories of her. May she rest in peace.
CAKE SALE: The local Youth Lourdes Volunteers would like to thank everyone for their support and contributions at their recent cake sale. They raised a total of €620.
DARKNESS INTO LIGHT: There was a walk,'' from Darkness into Light Walk'', through Curraghchase on Saturday May 7 in aid of the Community Crisis Response Team. It was a lovely morning for a social event and all for a worthy cause. It was organised at short notice by Joe and Caroline Rigney and raised €550. The tranquil and peaceful setting of Curraghchase is ideal for this event and next May we intend to organise a much larger walk. The Community Crisis Response Team are a Voluntary Suicide Intervention Patrol Team based in Askeaton and are available to anyone in distress at all times. Their contact number is: 085 1777631.
30TH ANNIVERSARY: We had a wonderful Community gathering in the Coach Inn last Saturday evening to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the record breaking Galeic Football Marathon held in our G.A.A. Field in 1986. The players of the Guinness Book of Records fame are, Bobby Foley, Martin Grealish, Donie Ivess, Terence Madigan, Joe Rushe, Donny Maher, Pat O'Shaughnessy. Ollie Hanley, John Maher, Richard O'Shaughnessy, Aubrey Bourke, Donal O'Shaughnessy, Niall Rushe, Johnny Dunne, were all present and they organised this function to show their appreciation to everyone who had anything to do in helping the making of a World Record. Thanks to Maureen and Ann in the Coach Inn for their hospitality and music, provided by Kim's People.
SOCCER: Congratulations to the four members of AK Utd on the Limerick Desmond U15 Interleague team who fought off Mayo in the All Ireland semi-final last Sunday in Kileady on a scoreline of 4-0. They now go forward to play North Dublin in the All Ireland Final on the third week-end of May in Cahir. Best of Luck to the Team and our local players, Kevin Walsh, Padraig Hartigan, Cathal Downes and Garrett Sparling.
Our local Junior team had a bad result last Sunday when going down 4 - 0 to Granagh in the top of the table clash.
TIDY TOWNS: Tidy Towns are continuing their house to house collection to fund the running costs to improve and maintain the look in the Community.
After many years of grass cutting in the area Michael O'Keeffe has finally retired. We would all like to thank Michael for his voluntary work over the years, which was very much appreciated.
PATRICKSWELL FAMILY FUN DAY: Patrickswell Community Council and the Share A Dream Foundation are jointly hosting a Tennis Ball Race and Family Fun Day on Sunday May 29 at McSweeneys Farm. The Fun Day begins at 1pm, with the Tennis Ball Race beginning at 3pm. There will be many other attractions and activities at the event to make it a fun filled family day out including a BBQ, Mouse Race, Bucking Bronco, Children Ammusements and Dog Show. All proceeds from the event will be shared between Patrickswell Community Council, which is building a new community centre in the village, and Share A Dream Foundation, who move heaven and earth to make a dream come true for a child who is terminally ill. Tennis ball tickets can be purchased for €5 each, with the wonderful prize of €1,000 for the first ball to cross the line. Tickets can be purchased by following the link on Patrickswell Community Council Facebook page, or from Patrickswell Resource Centre. We will be also hosting at Tractor Run on Saturday 27th starting at Mc Sweeney's Farm at 7pm with BBQ afterwards at the Dark Horse Pub to benefit both charities. INVASIVE SPECIES FIELDTRIP: West Limerick Resources will be running a half day fieldtrip to see first-hand the impact of invasive species in West Limerick on Tuesday May 31st. This will include training on identification but will look in more depth at the practical steps involved in appropriately maintaining areas affected by invasive species including site inspection, risk assessment, monitoring and correct removal techniques where appropriate. Open to members of local tidy towns groups, CE schemes or others involved in environmental enhancement work including trails management.
