GAELIC FOOTBALL MATCH 30th ANNIVERSARY: It is thirty years ago this month May 23 to be precise since that Friday morning history was created here in Kilcornan when two teams of seven a side began a Gaelic Football Match at 6am and continued playing for sixty hours and five minutes, that is, until 6.05pm on the following Sunday. The Teams were the Morenane Mighty's and lined out as follows Terence Madigan, Bobby Foley, Martin Grealish, Donie Ivess, Donny Maher, Pat O'Shaughnessy and Niall Rushe, versus the Curraghchase Rovers with their line up of Aubrey Bourke, Richard O'Shaughnessy, Johnny Dunne, Ollie Hanley, John Maher, Donie O'Shaughnessy and Joe Rushe.

This was a major undertaking for any group of sportsmen and indeed at the outset was thought by some to be an act of foolishness and could not be achieved. It was thought by many that 24 hours would be the best that could be done.

Application was made to the Guinness Book of Records for inclusion and it was agreed, provided we completed the game and followed the strict guidelines laid down by them, they would consider it.

The game started at 6am and finished 60 hours and 5 minutes later, the rest is History.

All the records were submitted and our Gaelic Football Match was validated and sanctioned for inclusion, in the Guinness Book of Records.

While the teams were creating history the support of everyone in the locality was enormous and many people stayed with the teams for the duration of the match.

In appreciation of the efforts of all the Community the team members, who, thankfully, are all still with us, wish to invite you all to an evening of celebration in The Coach Inn on this coming Saturday evening May 14 at 9pm. We will relive some moments of the Marathon and we will have music and song. We look forward to meeting you all.  Admission is free.
